Generic IMAP settings

Encrypted (required)
The purpose of using SSL for IMAP is primarily to keep your password secure. It also happens to encrypt the email you download, but please see this page to read more about email security.

Most modering email clients support this method. It will generally ask for the following pieces of information:

IMAP Server: mail.vanitude.com
Port: 993
Username: (your username)
Password: (your password)
Root folder: usually "~" but can also be "~/mail/"

Make sure you mark any applicable SSL checkbox as it probably won't work without it. Also, some clients (like Outlook Express) are smart enough that when you specify the SSL option it automatically changes the port to 993.

IMAP folders
The IMAP is different from POP3 in that the mail is not intended to be removed from the server. That is, with POP3, users download their mail to the local computer, and then delete it off the server to make more room for mail. IMAP uses a different model, where a user can create multiple mail "folders" (they're actually just files) and access those folders remotely over the network.

The primary advantage of this is that you can access all of your mail from practically anywhere (our Webmail client uses IMAP). Most Email clients that support IMAP will ask you to "subscribe" to folders. This generally entails selecting which folder is your Inbox, sent mail, drafts (aka postponed messages), trash, etc. You can also choose to add additional folders to your view, such as your spam, or your saved mail, for example. You can generally create as many folders as you'd like, but it's always best to come up with a system and stick to it.
